Year 4

Year 4 will be reading the range of books listed below, which covers all the subjects in this year's curriculum:

The topics we will be covering this term are:

Summer Term

English - Nelson Mandela - Long Walk to Freedom, Swallows and Amazons, Stig of the Dump.

Maths - Using decimals, money, time, statistics.

Science - Electricity, rocks, soils and fossils (Geology).

History - Nelson Mandela, Apartheid, Stone Age.

Geography - South Africa and trade routes.  Economic activity including trade links and natural resources.

Technology - Building sailing boats, building shelters and survival skills, making jewellery.

ICT - Computing icons.  Grace Hopper and debugging.  Online Safety - How much time should we spend online?  Drawing - assessing and selecting the different tools available in drawing applications.

Art - African themed art, artist from another country.  Stone age art and painting skills.

Music - Brass instrument - playing pieces that include the new note F, continue with their standard notation skills by reading rests of varying duration.  Playing pieces using all of their notes so far including the new note G, using more control in a short, spiky way and also smoothly.  

French - Body parts and aches, saying where it hurts and how we feel, clothes, colours – revision and saying dark and light colours. Express likes or dislikes and give a simple opinion. Learn weather and deciding what to wear. Prices and higher numbers(€ versus £) French celebrations.
Practice using Linguascope.

RE - Comparison of Hinduism, Christianity and Buddhism.

P.S.H.E. - How can our choices make a difference to others and the environment?  Caring, shared responsibilities, making choices and decisions.

Spring Term

English - Bombs and Blackberries.

Maths - Multiplication and division, problem solving, measure - area.

Science - animal and plant classification.

History - World War II

Geography - Fieldwork and maps, settlement and land use.

Technology - Kite Project (design, make and evaluate), drink design, researching, tasting, data collection, making, evaluating and package designing.

Art - Street art, Banksy (Artist's work).

PE- Badminton.  Tag Rugby.

French - School: revise school subjects, express likes or dislikes and give a simple opinion, numbers 1-31, saying the time (12 hour clock), revise days, timetables. Introduction Body parts and aches.  French celebrations.  Practice using Linguascope.

RE - Hinduism – Origin, Hindu Gods, Prayer and worship, special traditions and celebrations.

PSHE - Health and Wellbeing – managing our feelings and emotions.

Autumn Term

English - Using adjectives and noun phrases.  Plan for writing.  Using words in context.  Listen and retrieve information.  Recount and retell of stories.

Maths - Rounding, place value, column addition, subtraction and multiplication.

Science - Light and dark.

History - 17th century Britain, Great Fire, life and transport.

Geography - Continents and countries - focus on South America.

Technology - Design, build and evaluate building shelters.

ICT - Word processing, Powerpoint. Using the internet.

Art - Sketching, shading, mixed media, Kindinsky.

Music - Strings with Mrs Knight.

PE - Gymnastics, health and fitness. Basketball, healthy and fitness.

RE - Christianity.

French - Revision.  Practice using Linguascope.

PSHE - Who am I and healthy eating.

Outdoor Learning - Habitats, birds, local environment and data collection.

This year, we will be rewarding children who read at home every evening with a sticker and a table point at the end of the week. There will be an additional reward for children who have managed this for the whole half-term.
As well as hearing your child read every evening, here are some activities you might like to try at home to help develop their comprehension skills:

• Write about their favourite character from the book they are reading.
• Write a list of adverbs to show how a favourite character moves. (Try acting them out.)
• Draw a picture of the most important event in the book.
• Design a new front cover for the book.
• Write the blurb for the story.
• Write a different ending for the story.
• Change the setting for one of the scenes. How does this alter the story?
• Can they turn the story into a script?
• Use playdough and make a short animation of the book.
• Share books or comics that you loved as a child!

We would love to see any work completed at home.

Typing practise
It would be useful for children to spend time learning their typing skills at home so that they are able to work quicker on the computers in school. This is a great site to do this.
